Locorotondo

The name means "round place" (Latin: "locus rotundus"). Actually it is a small round village, made by whitewashed buildings with plenty of small shops and restaurants. Take a look to the unique roofs which are called "cummerse". They are characterized by orderly layered chalky slabs, locally called "chiancarelle", you'll see is the same technology used for the coned trulli but they are formed by two normal pitches. Note their gradient: it is not due to drain a great quantity of water (we are not here in a rainy mountain!) but in this way, the "cummerse" can be better compared to the shapes of the coned roofs of the trulli. It is an aesthetic reason. Don't miss to visit the Church of Santa Maria La Greca, erected by Filippo I D'Angiò, prince of Taranto. Peculiar of the facade are the lunette portal, the two statues of S. Peter and Paul at the extremities and the beautiful rose window. Really special is the local wine (Bianco di Locorotondo), perfect for fish dishes.
